The Mazda Motor Company was founded in 1920 by Jujiro Matsuda, who was formerly a ship's captain.
The company was originally named Toyo Kogyo, but Matsuda changed its name to Mazda in 1984. Matsuda wanted to build cars that were different from what everyone else was building at the time; he wanted to build cars that were based on the idea of "man's spirit.
He believed that a car should be built for one purpose: driving. He also felt that cars should be built with an eye toward efficiency and safety, not just speed and power.
The company first began production in Hiroshima, Japan, but moved to Tokyo in 1931 after several years of financial hardship due to the Great Depression.
During World War II, production stopped as supplies became scarce; however, after the war ended in 1945, production resumed and has continued ever since.

The Mazda 626 is one of their most famous vehicles which was first introduced in 1978.

It was an affordable four-door sedan that was based on the F2 platform used by other models like the Ford Cortina, Ford Granada, and Ford Mustang II/III.
This model got updated over time until 1994 when it received a new suspension system along with fuel injection technology which made it more powerful than before while improving fuel economy as well. In 1984, another model called Mazda MX-5 Miata was introduced which became very popular among consumers due to its affordable price tag along with excellent handling characteristics.
